Learn to cope with emotions and stress
Develop self-awareness and empathy
Learn to make healthy decisions and solve problems
EAL/EATA programs are offered year-round. The learning objectives for our programs depend on the goals of the participants &/or the group.
HORSEPOWER: Empowering today’s youth through EAL & EATA programs
Engaging and transformative Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) and Equine-Assisted Therapeutic (EATA) programs designed to empower neurotypical & neurodivergent children, teens, and young adults to become their best as they develop life skills through hands-on horsemanship experiences in unmounted sessions lead by professionals. Each week focuses on developing new skills while strengthening previously learned ones. Parents can expect to see measurable personal growth in their child through our programs.
THREE PILLARS:
1. Horsepower: Steady Strides (Ages 8-16) Ideal for neurodivergent children & teens with autism, sensory sensitivities, special needs, &/or social communication differences.
Steady Strides is designed for youth who learn and experience the world differently, with structured, supportive interactions with horses that build confidence, communication, and comfort in social environments. Hands-on horse care, predictable routines, quiet areas, and sensory-friendly activities help participants feel calm, capable, and connected.
2. Horsepower: Brave Hearts (Ages 10-18) For children and teens with ADHD, anxiety, grief, stress, PTSD, depression, or social challenges
Through our guided curriculum, Brave Hearts offers supportive equine-assisted therapeutic experiences for kids & teens experiencing anxiety, depression, grief from significant loss, PTSD, and other emotional stressors. Through hands-on activities working with our rescue horses, they build confidence, self-trust, resilience, and emotional balance, and both social and life skills at their own pace.
3.Horsepower: Strong Foundations (Ages 16-21)
For teens and young adults ages 16–21 navigating the transition to adulthood, Strong Foundations provides hands-on experiences with rescued horses that help participants build confidence, routine, and practical life skills. Through structured barn activities and horse care, participants practice teamwork, communication, responsibility, social awareness, problem-solving, and everyday tasks—from organizing tools and cleaning workspaces to caring for horses and contributing meaningfully to the farm community, earning skills to carry them through the years.
Programs run weekdays & weekends.
Cost $720/12 weeks or 360 for 6 week intro package.
UNBRIDLED PATHS: Individual or Group Equine-Assisted Therapy
Unbridled Path is an equine-assisted therapy program where licensed mental health professionals and intuitive horses work together to help heal from grief, trauma, PTSD, and life’s most difficult transitions. Through guided groundwork, observation, and reflective conversation, participants engage with horses—highly intuitive animals that respond authentically to human emotion and behavior. These interactions create opportunities to explore trust, boundaries, communication, and emotional resilience in a safe, supportive environment.
Sessions are facilitated by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and usually include an equine specialist, ensuring both clinical integrity and emotional safety.
Individual sessions are scheduled directly with the therapist.
Group sessions are limited to six participants and offered in packages of 4, 8, or 12 sessions.
Programs are currently offered on Saturdays.
WOW, all these initials! Let’s look at what some of them mean.
Equine-assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) are holistic treatments that use horses to help people grow emotionally, physically, and occupationally. EAAT can be broken down into two main categories:
Equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP or EAT)
A mental health professional supervises clients as they work with horses through activities like grooming, feeding, and leading. The goal is to help clients learn about themselves and others, and process their feelings, behaviors, and patterns. Practitioners are often required to have a graduate degree and are regulated by a state board. Examples of EAT include equine assisted counseling/psychotherapy and hippotherapy.
Equine-Assisted Activity (EAA): Refers to services provided by a non-licensed professional that utilizes the inherent therapeutic benefits of being around horses to enhance non-clinical activities. Facilitators are not regulated by a state board and are not required to have a degree in their field. Examples include therapeutic horseback riding, therapeutic vaulting, and therapeutic driving.Equine assisted learning is also considered to be an EAL has a tendency to cross over to EAA however for our usage here, EAL refers to our engaging, fun unmounted horsemanship classes.
EAAT alone or combined with EAP can help people with a variety of conditions, including:
Anxiety
Depression
Dementia
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Schizophrenia-spectrum illness
Autism-spectrum disorders
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Social anxiety
Dyspraxia
Attachment disorders
US Horse Welfare & Rescue is delighted to offer Equine-Assisted therapy with a certified equine therapist. Sessions are booked directly with the therapist and are eligible to be billed to your insurance.

“It’s amazing what a healing effect horses can have on kids…; that might bridge the gap that a well-intended human just can’t do.”
- Buck Brannaman
They say Horse People are Stable People for a Reason
A SNAPSHOT INTO THE BENEFITS OF CHILDREN SPENDING TIME WITH HORSES
Kids all have something they would like to escape from, at least for a little while…whether it be general life stressors or more targeted worries about things like a move and a new school, death of a loved one, extended isolation as we saw with Covid, grades, making the team, friendships, problems at home, impending divorce, or inner emotions and thoughts that they just aren’t able to express to others. They long to be happy, to be free of responsibility, just hang out with peers and feel utter & complete joy in their day-to-day lives. Yet life isn’t that easy, and today’s youth have far more to navigate in their world than any generation before them. They deal with social media bombarding them with images and words that make them feel “inept,” “ugly,” “stupid,” “fat,” and even “worthless.” Suicide rates among our youth are climbing, and now more than ever, today’s youth need a place to safely reset themselves consistently, to forget about the outside world for a while and break the chronic stress. Here at Nod Hill Farm, home to US Horse Welfare & Rescue, your children have the opportunity to explore and develop meaningful relationships with our rescue horses while making new friends as we offer each of them an unparalleled experience and safe haven.
HOW DO WE DO IT? ……..ENTER THE HORSE!
The Horse, “a large plant-eating domesticated or wild mammal with solid hooves and a flowing mane and tail….
And which “studies have demonstrated time spent interacting with horses increases positive emotions, decreasing depression and increasing social connection skills in children and adults alike” (Horse Behaviour & Psychology by Annika McGivern, 2020).
The Connection with a horse is unlike any other experience…whether on the ground or riding the horse, there is no other feeling like it. It has been medically proven to improve both the physical and mental health of humans. Horses are increasingly becoming our therapists, our confidants, our best friends, our safe place where we are not judged. They provide a listening ear to tell secrets and troubles to. Horses FEEL our energy and provide constant feedback, allowing us to better understand our own energy and emotions and its impact on others. The horse is a healers.
The Stress for today’s youth is greater than ever, resulting in accompanying health risks, anxiety, depression, and a staggering increase in the suicide rate. More children are on medication to help them cope with the effects of these stressors than ever before and many are repeatedly foregoing a good night’s sleep. Parents seek help, yet often hit stone walls because traditional outlets for these kids just aren’t cutting it. “Talk Therapy” fails for a lot of youth. ENTER THE HORSE and the profound, and well-documented, benefits to today’s youth from spending quality time with and around horses in a safe, non-judgmental environment.
The Benefits & The Beneficiaries These programs are designed for both the differently-abled children, (such as those diagnosed with Autism,) as well as the neurotypical child. They have all experienced well-documented benefits from working with horses. We offer Unmounted “Ground” Programs as well as Mounted Programs.
Well Documented Outcomes include:
Greater introspection, the discovery of inner strengths, and acknowledgment of the consequences of their actions and behaviors.
Increased self-confidence, self-esteem, self-worth, and development of greater self-control
Greater respect for others and setting/respecting appropriate boundaries, making new friends
Reduction in anxiety, tension, and stress
Expression of greater happiness
Additionally, they learn patience, responsibility, team building, leadership, and more. Behavioral issues lessen. They continue to exhibit increased happiness as long as they continue to have intermittent horse time, whether mounted or unmounted (once a week is recommended whether mounted or unmounted).
